Food grade alcohol, conventional or organic

We manufacture a variety of organic and conventional neutral alcohols and bulk spirits. With the increased costs of operating a craft distillery after the economic turmoil brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, more brands are turning to medium-sized distilleries for their base spirit to be used in blending, bottling or canning RTDs. Our alcohol can be purchased in bulk for use as a raw material in alcoholic beverage manufacturing, blending, bottling, or canning at a third-party distillery or co-packer.  Food grade ethyl alcohol, also called food grade ethanol, is made by fermenting & distilling raw agricultural materials, including grains, fruit and sugarcane, to high purity without any additives. Food grade alcohol is ethanol that is intended for human consumption and can be used in food and drink production. Any ethanol that is not denatured applies to be food grade; however, the distribution of food grade ethanol requires adherence to strict regulations.  Our certified organic ethyl alcohol meets strict legal and food industry standards that apply to the production, processing and packaging. This makes your product 100% traceable. Organic ethyl alcohol is made exclusively from organic ingredients, without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Additionally, the distillation of organic alcohol is carried out in a dedicated distillery. To guarantee the organic origin of the product, there are several organic certifications issued by regulatory bodies. New Deal Distillery is a certified organic production facility licensed through California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). CCOF is a United States Department of Agriculture-accredited organic certifying agency and trade association, located in Santa Cruz, California. Formed in 1973, CCOF was the first organic certification entity in the United States. Food grade alcohol produced at New Deal Distillery can be certified organic under both USDA Organic and CCOF Organic seals. We can also supply certified GMO-free ethanol.

Bulk Spirits & Distillates

Neutral grain alcohol (GNS)

Grain alcohol is ethanol made from the starch of grain crops such as wheat, corn, rye, barley, and rice. High-purity ethanol made from grains is often called grain neutral spirit (GNS), due to its high alcohol content (95% ABV). In the food and beverage industry, the choice of grain greatly impacts the taste notes of spirits, flavoring agents, and more.  GNS can also be used across a broad range of applications in non-food industries. Grain alcohol requires a thorough distillation, giving it a neutral smell, taste, transparent color, and a low number of impurities. Making  GNS is a complex process with specific criteria to qualify as a neutral spirit. A.B.V. (alcohol by volume) is the standard measurement to assess the strength of alcohol. For neutral alcohol, specific criteria must be met to qualify as a base through column or pot distilling. In the U.S., neutral spirits must reach 95% A.B.V. or be 190 proof, accomplished through column distilling Grain alcohol plays a crucial role in giving traditional flavors to spirits such as whisky and brandy. Our wide selection of grains, including wheat, rye, and more, enables you to choose your preferred raw material based on taste preferences, budget restrictions and regional availability. Neutral grain alcohol is also a key ingredient in crafting other beloved spirits like gin and fortified wine. Understanding the nuances of each grain’s characteristics and how they contribute to the final product is key to selecting the perfect grain for your ethanol applications.

Bulk vodka

Vodka is one of the most basic neutral spirits that also serves as a classic ingredient in cocktails and RTDs. Usually made from fermented grains, this popular spirit can be distilled from various starchy fruits and vegetables including grapes, potatoes, barley or spelt. In the U.S., vodka must have a standard concentration of at least 40% A.B.V. Our custom CARL 22-plate column still is a powerhouse of vodka production and private label vodka production is still in high demand.

Bulk rum

Rum alcohol, also known as rum distillate or rum base, refers to the distilled spirit that is produced through the fermentation and distillation of sugarcane byproducts, such as Blackstrap molasses or panela, a minimally processed cane sweetener manufactured without the use of centrifuge processes. The process involves fermenting the sugarcane-derived material to create a crude alcohol, which is then distilled to achieve the desired alcohol content and purity. This rum alcohol is colorless with a high alcohol content, and can be used as a base for both aged and unaged rums. Sugarcane ethanol is used as a base for many spirits, rum being undoubtedly the most famous one. Another very popular sugarcane alcohol drink is cachaça, however, it is also suitable for all kinds of other liquors. Next to the bulk spirit market, sugarcane alcohol can be used as a preservative or flavoring agent in the food industry. Additionally, its neutral base and high purity are highly relevant for the creation of non-food products such as perfumes and pharmaceuticals.

White rum (light rum)

Clear, un-aged cane spirit with neutral taste and maximum versatility

Amber (or gold) rum

minimally-aged cane spirit with notes of vanilla, caramel & spices derived from aging in Oak barrels

Dark (or black) rum

longer-aged cane spirit with darker color and strong, full-bodied flavor profile with notes of molasses, spices and possible smoky flavor

Overproof rum

Bulk whiskey

Bourbon
Bourbon is made primarily from corn and aged in charred oak barrels; sweet,  robust flavor profile, often with notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak. To be labeled as bourbon, the spirit must meet specific legal requirements, including being made in the U.S. and containing at least 51% corn.
Corn Whiskey
Made primarily from corn and typically unaged or aged for a short period, corn whiskey has a sweet and straightforward taste.
Rye Whiskey
Also from the U.S., rye whiskey is made primarily from rye grains. It tends to have a spicier and fruitier profile compared to bourbon, with notes of pepper, cinnamon, and sometimes fruitiness from the rye.
Wheat Whiskey
We can work with specific wheat farmers in Oregon & Washington to produce wheat distillate for aging in barrels or, for use to make wheat vodka. When aged to produce wheat whiskey, the grassy, nutty notes distinguish it from other mash bills.

Bulk Brandy (from wine)

Wine brandy ideal solution for businesses in the hospitality industry that are looking to further dilute brandy into first-rate alcoholic beverages or culinary products. Being ideally situated to source bulk wine from California, Oregon or Washington in varying degrees of quality, we can ensure custom production to your specifications. Our 450L CARL copper pot still is considered one of the most highly regarded pieces of distillation equipment used in brandy production.

Bulk Fruit Brandy (from whole fruit, juice or cider)

Given our proximity to the Columbia Gorge and Central Washington, home to some of the largest commercial fruit orchards in the US, we are able to produce fruit brandies directly from whole fruit, as well as from juice or hard cider. We produce both eau de vie (unaged) style and aged brandy.

Grape alcohol

Organic grape alcohol (also known as grape neutral alcohol, grape distilled spirits and 190 proof grape alcohol) is ethanol produced from grapes. It is usually a by-product of the wine industry, being made from those parts of the grape leftover from the winemaking process. It is also neutral and therefore has no taste or smell. Not only is grape alcohol a 100% natural product. Being a wine-making bi-product, it is also extremely environmentally-friendly, as it makes use of something that would otherwise go to waste. This makes it particularly attractive to a growing number of companies and consumers for whom sustainability is a priority. Having no taste or smell, grape alcohol is perfect for use in a range of traditional drinks, including sherry and other fortified wines, pomace brandies such as grappa, and spirits such as gin and vodka. Its neutral smell and taste also mean you will find grape alcohol in skincare products such as hand sanitizers, as well as a wide range of other personal hygiene and cosmetics products. The use of grape alcohol for tinctures is also increasingly popular. The high alcohol content also makes grape alcohol a very effective preservative, which explains why it is popular with manufacturers in everything from the home cleaning sector right through to the food industry.

Bulk Gin

Gin, a captivating spirit with a rich history, is crafted by distilling neutral grain alcohol and infusing it with a blend of botanicals, prominently featuring juniper berries. This infusion of botanicals gives gin its distinctive taste and aromatic profile, making it a favorite among connoisseurs worldwide.
London Dry Gin
London Dry Gin is the most classic and widely recognized style known for its crisp and dry taste. It is characterized by a predominant juniper flavor and is typically produced with a minimal amount of added sweeteners.
Old Tom Gin
Old Tom Gin is a sweeter style that bridges the gap between the drier London Dry and the more juniper-forward Dutch gins. It was popular in the 18th century and is currently experiencing a revival in the modern craft cocktail scene.
New Western/American Gin
This modern style of gin deviates from the traditional juniper-forward profile. New Western Gins prioritize a broader spectrum of botanicals, allowing other flavors to take the lead. They often showcase unique and creative botanical combinations.
Flavoured/Infused Gin
Gins infused with various botanicals, fruits, or herbs fall into this category. Popular choices include citrus-infused gins, floral gins, or those incorporating unique local ingredients.

Molasses alcohol

During sugar refining, the juice extracted from sugarcane or sugar beets is boiled to remove the sugar crystals. The residual syrup-like substance left after crystallization is molasses. This molasses contains residual sugars that can be fermented to produce alcohol. We produce molasses alcohol through the process of fermentation, converting the sugars in Blackstrap molasses into ethanol. The applications for this versatile product are wide-ranging, encompassing its use in alcoholic beverages, culinary endeavors, and the extraction of valuable extracts. With its captivating flavors and distinct taste, molasses alcohol, crafted through the fermentation of molasses, gives birth to an array of rum variations, including the indulgent and spiced varieties. Alcohol from molasses can be used for rum production but is also commonly used in cooking and baking to enhance flavors in recipes. It adds a unique sweetness and richness to dishes like rum cakes, sauces, glazes, and marinades. Another common use for molasses alcohol is in the production of confectionery items, such as chocolates, truffles, and fudges. It can also be incorporated into desserts like rum-infused cakes, puddings, and ice creams. It is also commonly employed in the production of tinctures, extracts, and herbal remedies.
Industrial ethyl alcohol is an odorless, tasteless, high-purity alcohol obtained by fermenting sugar starch from a wide variety of raw materials including sugar beet, sugar cane, wheat, grain, rye and corn, or by synthesis. The alcohol is often denatured making the ethanol unusable in alcoholic drink products, and thus exempt from certain taxes and levies. If you do not use alcohol for food and beverage-grade products, we can denature it for you. In that case, the product will be exempt from excise taxes. Denaturants are essential additives in the ethanol industry. By incorporating specific chemicals into ethanol for industrial use, denaturants impart unpleasant tastes, odors, or toxic properties, transforming it into “denatured ethanol.” This ensures compliance with regulations, helps prevent misuse or accidental ingestion, and lets you avoid high tax excise tax payments. The denaturant we use is Bittrex. Bittrex, also known as denatonium benzoate, is the most bitter chemical compound known, with bitterness thresholds of 0.05 ppm, where 10 ppm is unbearably bitter for most humans. Industrial alcohol is an umbrella term encompassing a wide variety of products and applications. Industrial alcohol has numerous non-food applications including some of the following:

Cosmetic ethanol

Ethanol is very widely used in the cosmetics industry because it has such a wide range of highly beneficial properties. It is used in hygiene products like deodorants due to its antiviral, antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal qualities. While its ability to facilitate the depositing of a product’s active ingredients on the user’s hair or skin obviously makes it ideal for hair products like shampoo and hairspray, but also for the depositing of pigments when applying make-up. It is the main ingredient in perfumes and eau de toilettes, sometimes with and sometimes without a denaturant. Ethanol can also be used in makeup and lotions, shaving and skincare products, oral care products, and more. Ethanol enables your superficial skin to absorb a product’s active ingredients quicker, which is great for perfumes and colognes. But it also evaporates fast (also known as having ‘high volatility’), which means the ethanol is in contact with your skin relatively briefly. This minimizes the chance of skin irritation, making ethanol ideal for use in everything from make-up and moisturizer to hair color and sunscreen. In addition, ethanol is a highly efficient hydrolyzing agent, helping dissolve other ingredients in a product; but also a natural preservative, a refreshing agent, a sun filter and a solubilizer of active ingredients. And finally, ethanol is a natural product that can be used by manufacturers in organic products, which are increasingly in demand with today’s consumer. This is one reason why leading cosmetics brands and manufacturers tend to avoid the use of synthetic alcohol.

Ethanol as flavoring agent

Ethanol is a versatile and widely used solvent in the food and beverage industry, and it plays a crucial role as a flavor carrier in a multitude of applications such as cooking extracts and beverages. Grain neutral alcohol and organic ethyl alcohol are the most commonly used ethanol types when it comes to flavor carriers.  Ethanol is a go-to choice for creating concentrated extracts. Vanilla extract, one of the most beloved and versatile flavors in baking and cooking, is often extracted using food-grade organic ethyl alcohol. This process harnesses the essence of the vanilla bean, producing a flavor extract that enhances a myriad of sweet and savory dishes. Other baking applications include cake batter flavoring and cake flavoring essences. These flavor extracts for baking are meticulously crafted to ensure their efficacy in adding depth and character to culinary creations.

Ethanol for sanitizer

Sanitizer alcohol is a pure form of alcohol used to kill viruses, bacteria, and microorganisms on hands. The alcohol can be mixed with water and other ingredients as you prefer, but alcohol-based hand sanitizers should contain at least 60% alcohol to be effective (according to the American Center for Disease Control).

Ethanol for perfume

Perfumer’s alcohol, also known as perfumery alcohol, alcohol denat, or cosmetic alcohol, refers to a specialized type of alcohol used as the main ingredient in perfumes and other fragranced products. Perfume alcohol typically consists of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) as the primary base. The specific ethanol used in perfumer’s alcohol is often denatured, meaning it has been treated to make it unsuitable for consumption. It is a specific blend of ethanol and other ingredients designed to meet the requirements of the perfumery industry. The perfume alcohol content can vary, but it is typically around 70-90%.

Ethanol cleaning solutions

Ethanol, in its various forms, is widely recognized as a cleaning powerhouse. Cleaning ethanol solutions effectively tackle dirt, grime, and stains from a variety of surfaces, including plastics, glass, ceramics, and metals, which is why it is used in a wide range of cleaning products, for example, glass cleaners. Due to its disinfection properties, solvent capabilities, quick evaporation, compatibility, safety, and availability, ethanol is a popular choice as a cleaning agent in various industries, including healthcare, hospitality, and household cleaning.
