December 5th , 2009: New Deal Distillery’s Season’s Eatings
As we prepare for the holidays, we each have our own culinary traditions. When it comes down to it, regardless of what we cook, we all share the same desire –to create through a meal, a meaningful experience for ourselves and those we care for. How fortunate we are then, to have a plethora of amazing local food artisans, vintners and distillers right in our own backyard. Choosing locally when we decide what to bring, serve or give during the holiday season reflects respect for ourselves and appreciation for the environment that sustains us. It strengthens our local food economy, and lends support to the family farms who make it all possible. It allows us to create holiday traditions that are meaningful on so many levels.
Please join us at the Distillery and Tasting Room from noon to 5:00 PM for a spirited holiday market event celebrating our area’s finest chocolates, cheeses, wines, spirits and foodstuffs to benefit the Oregon Food Bank. Meet the artisans behind the culinary treasures, sample extraordinary local spirits, and find something wonderful for every foodie on your list. Admission is free with 1 non-perishable food item or cash donation for the Oregon Food Bank.
Guest vendors include Organics to You, Monteillet Fromagerie, Random Order Coffeehouse, Tails and Trotters, Xocolatl de David, Black Sheep Bakery, Little Red Bike Café, Velo Café, River Wave Foods, Pacific Pies and more!

Junk to Funk Recycled Fashion Show Contest
Junk to Funk Recycled Fashion Show Contest is an annual production aimed to educate it’s audiences about waste reduction, recycling issues and to inspire creative re-use. We do this in a most unique way: through showcasing wearable art and couture fashion based on the creative use of “trash” in an eclectic and often humorous production.
Join Mayor Sam Adams and the Mercury’s Marjorie Skinner at the Crystal Ballroom for the Junk to Funk Fashion Show Contest presided over by the Junk Jury: Local Designer Adam Arnold, Kelley Carmichael-Casey from SCRAP, Kristen Calhoun from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, Prasenjit Tito Chowdhury from Portland Fashion Week and Ronda Chapman-Duer from the Oregon Association of Recyclers. Enjoy musical performances by Junquestra. Audience costumes are encouraged! But don’t worry, if you don’t get to it before hand, SCRAP will be on site with a DIY Scrappy Accessories Table.

New Distillery Row Website
Something truly unique is occurring in Portland—a craft distillation revolution. A handful of innovative small distilleries are making handcrafted, locally distilled spirits available for the first time since prohibition. The heart of this movement lies in Distillery Row: an inconspicuous neighborhood of small warehouses and light industrial buildings in Southeast Portland, known as the lower east-side industrial district. In a strip 16 blocks long and five blocks wide, five independent distilleries (housing seven spirits companies) have begun producing over twenty unique liquors. They make everything from vodkas and gins, rums and whiskeys, to more specialized spirits such as absinthe,
aquavit, and flavored liqueurs.
